Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

IFMSA-Jo Program · SCORA

About the Program

The Gender-Based Violence program works to improve access to healthcare-related services and the quality of life of GBV fighters and survivors. The program uses the terms fighters and survivors to emphasize dignity, agency and support for people of every gender and age who have experienced or are experiencing gender-based violence.

Its work includes reducing stigma around medical and mental-health care, improving knowledge of the institutions and services available in Jordan, and promoting confidential and safe disclosure pathways across Jordan's main cities.

Target Population

  • Medical students
  • The general community

Focus Areas

  • How to identify GBV signs and deal with them properly, because the response may influence the psychological and physical outcomes for fighters and survivors
  • Educating communities about responsible ways to address GBV online and in person
  • Physical, psychological, sexual, emotional and domestic violence, as well as harmful practices including forced marriage and so-called honor crimes
  • The legal perspective on GBV and the consequences established by law

Objectives

  • Support GBV fighters and survivors.
  • Familiarize medical students with signs of GBV and the appropriate way to address them.
  • Create a safe environment and reduce the stigma around GBV disclosure and seeking medical care due to GBV.
  • Build capacity for medical students within SCORA.
